Brown and filmy does not necessarily mean a headgasket failure. A frothy thickish brown coloured mixture of oil and water in the coolant tank or in the engine oil would be an indicator however. The smell of coolant in the cabin probably means that your heater control valve is failing- not the head gasket.
When was the last time you had the cooling system serviced? Sounds like a while ago (or not at all) if the hose blew. Depending on how long the car was driven after the hose blew you may or may not have head gasket damage. I would go the easy route first before i replaced (or suspected) the headgasket.
Dump the old coolant, flush the whole system very well, change the thermostat and replace BOTH of the upper cooling system hoses (ie. short hose that died plus the longer one to the radiator). You would have to do this stuff anyway so no money is lost. Drive the car and see what happens. if you are still having problems after that then go after the headgasket.
