Thanks for the insight. The ABS light did go on, and I think the brake fluid light went on as well, though it wasn't on prior to driving the day the brakes failed. Another little piece of the puzzle that I just remembered - the brake fluid light was on when I purchased it - the girl who I bought it from said that it had been on for a few months and that she'd had it checked out by her Saab mechanic who had said he couldn't find a reason for it but that the car was holding brake fluid. However, at that point, we didn't actually see any brake fluid in the reservoir so we put some more in. The light promptly went off. This was about two or three weeks before the brakes failed.
The nearest indie mechanic recommended on this site is about 45 miles away - a bit of a pricey tow - and the car is not in driving condition. Does this info give you any more insight on what it might be, and if it does sound like a bad accumulator, do you know how much that repair would run? If the accumulator goes, is that the only thing that needs to be replaced, or does that end up causing damage to another component?
I also have two more questions, if you don't mind (I'm sorry, I know nothing about this stuff).
1. If it was a bad accumulator, is that a difficult to recognize repair?
2. What sort of test would the Saab mechanic have run that would result in an incorrect diagnosis of a bad ABS pump instead of a bad accumulator? Is there a wide margin of error in these diagnostics?
