If your mechanic is trying to tell you, "I don't want to work on this car anymore" then it is time to move on. Check out the mechanic listing here on TSN. I found someone just last week that's 25 miles from my house and did the unthinkable- he made my gas mileage on my 33-MPG-all-summer 8 valve (225k by the way) go UP.
156k is nothing for a 900 unless it's an automatic. If it is, I've noticed that about half of the auto 900s around have their original gearboxes fail like clockwork right around that time. That's when I decided that my '88 (back in January of 2003) was still worth it, so I changed the transmission. Here I am, over five years and 70k later.
Figure out what the symptoms are (dash lights on? Codes stored?) that make your mech say that the valve body is dead. Even if it is, those are VERY robust units, so I'll say that you have an 85% chance that a junkyard unit is fine. You can also find people with parts cars on the TSN classifieds. I'd say exhaust all your options before parting the car out. Get a Saab-specific independent shop (usually a place with multiple if not dozens of parts-Saabs in the back yard) and have them figure out if that really is the problem. Occasionally the control units will fail, especially if the area beneath the rear seat has ever accumulated water. Even if it is the valve block, get one out of a junkyard for $250 and get the car down the road. All those parts you just put into it will be able to do something other than make money fly out of your wallet and never come back.
Please keep us posted.
