Hi everyone!

This is my first posting here - I was referred by someone who recommend it highly.

I am the owner of a 1992 Saab 900 that I owned for barely 3 weeks before the ABS pump failed. The mechanics said that the replacement was so expensive as to not make it worth it. We didn't scrap the car... just hung on to it, and just found out that we can get a salvage part and have the replacement done for a total of around $400.

The car has 156,000 miles on it. I know that the car has been serviced by Saab-specific mechanics for most of its life, I don't think it was babied, but I believe that the owner had it serviced whenever she noticed that the car needed something.

I was really upset about essentially throwing away $1600 for three weeks of driving this car (we had to replace the rotors/brakes to pass initial inspection), and am excited about the thought of getting it back on the road for $400.

BUT, there's the whole 'fool me once...' thing going on, and I don't want to throw money at a car that will just be a money pit. It would be nice for the family to have a second car, but not worth it if the car is going to break down and leave us stranded, or have some other high cost repair be needed next month.

Does anyone have any advice that they can offer? I don't know whether to just sell it for salvage, fix it and sell it, or whether to hang onto it in the hopes that it will turn out to be a surprisingly good deal.

The mechanic says "It's tired. It has 156,000 miles on it," but doesn't give specifics as far as what else is likely to go wrong next. Just that it's old and therefore nearing the end of it's lifespan.

Does anyone know how many miles these cars last on average, what things might be likely to go wrong next, how reliable they are at this point (will my toddler and I be left stranded en route someplace), and whether it would be a big mistake to take a chance?

Thanks so much for your help.
