The brown filmy splooge in your radiator reservoir is an indicator, but the blown heater hose makes the diagnosis certain. As appealing as it may be, the hose did not fail because it was old and decrepit, it failed because combustion gas, vented into the coolant channels because of a bad HG, is over-pressurizing the coolant system. You can replace the hose, but be assured that the next weak link in the coolant circuit will fail very soon.
Bite the bullet, fix the problem. I did it 17k mi ago on my '93 NA after symptoms exactly as you describe, especially the cascading hose failure. Parts and head-planing cost about $250 and it took me about 12 hrs of actual work (your results may vary).
TwinSaabs guide is key, post here for help along the way.
Good luck!
