Has your system has been converted to R134a or does it still have the old R12 stuff? If it is R134a or all the R12 has leaked out (fairly typical) i would suggest the following:
- disconnect all the hoses in the system. Repair (if you can find a local shop that will do it cheaply) or replace any failing hoses. Typically the only thing that fails is the crimped connections at the ends so repair is a matter of replacing the crimped connection. Most times it's quicker and cheaper just to buy new however.
- the biggest problem you will encounter when you disconnect hoses are the connections at the bottom of the condenser. Typically the connections will be so badly corroded (if you live in a northern climate) that they will be impossible to separate without tearing all the threads off the aluminum condenser (in which case . . . time for a new condenser and some new hoses). I typically take the bumper off to get at these connections.
- replace every o-ring (~$15).
- remove the receiver/dryer and replace with a new one (~$25)
- put the whole system back together
- add ~2 cans of R134a (with the R134a lubricant)
The end result is that the AC should now work decently for at least the next two years (until some new leaks show up). You'll have noted that i didn't bother flushing or evacuating the system (i expect howls of protest here). If you can find someone who will evacuate the system for you without charging a lot of money or giving you a bunch of grief (usually about how you should have had things rebuilt professionally) then go for it. If not, then you will probably be OK without.
Others will certainly disagree but this is what has worked well for me.
