I suppose "never wear out" might be an exaggeration, but certainly the lifetime of the vehicle. The family Volvo 745T was sold at 19 years and 250,000 miles with the original smog-passing cat, and my 2-owner '91 900Tc is at 17 years and 184,000 miles with the original cat. My XR4Ti finally toasted its original at 18 years and 280,000 miles when the TPS failed - it might have kept going otherwise.
Point is, if the engine is kept in good repair the cat won't die under normal circumstances. Normal air quality variations won't affect them, but oil, fuel, and heat will kill them quickly.
