A popular name in the repair business for these cats are "2 year cats".
When the car is due for the bi annual smog it is also time for a new cat.
The amount on honeycomb substrate (brick) in these low cost cats are minimal and they deplete them self in a lot shorter time than an original one.
They also don't stand up to an engine that is not tuned to perfection so if you have a running issue or maybe burning oil, these cats will die a lot quicker than an original one, ones again, due to the size of the brick.
But its difficult to defend spending $1187.00 on a Saab genuine one on a 20-25 year old car even though that one might last another 10-20 years as long as the engine is running well.
