100% agree with john-forget about the bottom end, Posted by nicknick [Email] (#731) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nicknick) on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 11:02:30 In Reply to: Engine Rebuild? unless there were noises before HG went. having said that, when the HG went, how badly did the engine overheat?
i bought a 93t last year that had been terribly overheated, and i put a replacement head on (the old one was warped), compression tested it before reconnecting up everything, and discovered that the rings were shot. now, this did not stop the car from driving, but it is very noticeable. from memory, i had comp figures of something like 80-50-60-90!
just about to swap the bottom end now.
so, if the engine did not get completely toasted, i would not even think about bottom end for now, especially because you are doing this HG job on the street. i assume you are aware of what is involved in removing the block from one of these? not like a chevvy, thats for sure. entire lump out, split engine/trans, etc.
so do the head work, it is an investment whatever else happens, and the HG is only $20 anyway. Comp test the unit once back together, see if you have roughly equal numbers (around 150 i think), and drive it. if there is any problems with the rings, they can be put off 'till you have the time, money and facilities to do it right.
hope this helps. good luck
PS-Timing chain can be a real pain to time up properly, do alot of research before taking this job on, especially Anders (swedecar) has a great pic on timing marks, and 16 rollers between marks, and tensioner extension to indicate chain wear (11mm) and chain guides-Bently!
