The yards down here check everything before you enter. There is no way you could get a full on oxyacetyl torch in, no matter how small. They'll let you have your cigarette lighters, but that's about it.
The yard I'm at has about a 8 foot wall. Inside that wall, directly next to you, is a 7,000 volt fence. It doesn't look very professional either. I don't know when they turn it on (presumably at night) but I watch my step.
One time I was at another yard (2,000+ cars) and I noticed a group of kids wandering around. About 5 minutes later a police chopper is buzzing around while one of the staff is lugging this HUGE bat thing to beat these kids with. They had tried to sneak out of a side entrance without paying for a stock radio.
They actually called in a chopper and several squad cars for that. Honestly, I think it was more for the protection of those kids.
After all of my years walking around u-pull-its and such, I definitely see why they have the rules they do. Most of the guys are cool enough if you are polite and frequent their establishment. A little haggling is OK if done once in a while.
But whatever you do, don't bring in a jack, a torch or try to steal. They will beat you senseless. That is no joke.
