Hi, hopefully you have already solved your issues, if not read on.

First and foremost, look for air leaks in either the vacuum lines OR the air intake connectors (those big black ones with the hose clamps at each end) making sure they are over the throttle body far enough for the clamp to cinch on solid stuff underneath. I have see it where the hose was slide too far to one side and the other side was sucking air.. also make sure thay you don't have any cracks. you may have to take things apart to make sure, I've found cracks and they are always on the side you can see when installed... it makes you suck air and run lean, sometimes...

The last two cars that had symptoms that sound similar were fixed by either the AMM replacement with another used one or the AIC (air idle control, or IAC idle air control - you say tomato...). The second is easier to checkout, and often can be fixed. The AIC is the unit strapped on top of the thermostat housing - right at the end of the fuel rail. has a single electrical connector and two hoses - usually with clamps - and a 10mm head bolt on the strap, back the bolt out and remove the hoses, be sure to press the wire into the connector to remove. look in the side hose opening and see the metal sleeve, using a small screw driver see if you can get the insides to rotate with ease, if you can then put a thumb over that hose opening and blow into the other to test it holds pressure. If it's leaking it often happens from the plastic around the connector. see if you can find another one at the junk yard, do the same tests there to decide if it's one to purchase. IF on the otherhand, the guts won't move, used WD-40 and/or PB blaster to free the inside. DO NOT use carb cleaner or brake cleaner - those can melt the plastic mentioned above. You may have to put the cleaner in and block the hose ports and site overnight. work it till it moves very freely, if you can get it to move, and it nearly just slops around... get another one.

If this doesn't fix the problem then, before looking at the AMM, make SURE that all of the intake coupling hoses (the big black ones) are in tack and don't have any cracks. you may have to take things apart to make sure, I've found cracks and they are always on the side you can see when installed... it makes you suck air and run lean, sometimes...

Take the connector on the AMM off and look closely at the flat blade connectors, see any GREEN? get an emery board and clean the contacts, then use a fine flat file to clean the contacts in the plug. when the car is warmed up and at idle if you unplug the AMM the car should notice, the idle will dive and come back. If unplugging it does nothing, consider trying another one.

If you are still working it, then get another AMM from the junkyard and put it in, sometimes you can pay a little extra to get insurance that the part is either good or is the correct one, then take it back if it's not.
