Long story, so bear with me..

Last Fall I'm driving my 89' 900 down the highway and the engine hiccups a couple times, felt like it lost all power for a split second and then came back to life. Little further down the road, the engine totally cuts out leaving me on the side of the highway. After 30 min or so, it starts up and runs long enough to exit the freeway and then dies on a side street.

After towing to the shop, it predictably ran normally and they were unable to reproduce the issue. Checked the usual suspects; vacuum hoses, fuel pump/pressure, electrics and found no faults.

The car ran normally for about 4 months, and then died again under the same circumstances (actually in the exact same spot) but again ran normally after an hour. Following this they felt the primary suspects were the Air Mass Meter and crank rotation sensor or possibly the ECU. Opted to replace the AMM as it's the lesser expensive option and went on my way.

A week later, the symptoms were back; while driving on the freeway/surface roads the engine would momentarily cut out although fortunately no breakdown on the side of the road this time.

Took it back to the shop and replaced the crank rotation sensor, some worn belts and welded a crack in the exhaust manifold and all has been good for the last few months until today, when it just up and died in the middle of an intersection. I was able to get it restarted and limp on home.

So whats next?

From what I've been able to find online, the ECU seems like it could be part of the problem, but I'm reluctant to keep throwing money at the car and drive around waiting for the next breakdown.

There doesen't seem to be any common variables involved with the various breakdowns; the weather/temperature has been different each time, have switched gasoline brands several times, and engine temp is within normal range at the time of the incident.

The only things that come to mind are that the engine fan seems to be running more than normal considering that indicated temp. is below the 1/2 mark on the gauge and the battery is getting older.

Other major maintenance items fixed on this car have been: Oil pump and split pulley replacement, replacement of head gasket etc. when that blew out and rebuild on the clutch and transmission.

Anyone have any ideas? Is the ECU worth replacing? Any other possible causes?

Thanks!
