This has just happened to me too. A longish story.

I was driving to Maine from New Hampshire and the car stuttered and lost some power but came back. Then I pulled off at a rest stop rather than risk going further. Drove delicately the 12 miles to a rental car place on backroads and finished the journey in a rented car.

When I returned decided to try to get to garage by driving. Drove about 5 miles car stutters coughs and dies on I95. Towed to garage where like you said it started and they checked everything ignition-related. Replaced a few things, rebuilt dirtibutor. Seemed fixed.

Then I start on the same trip the next week. Exact same place the car starts to stutter again. I think 'oh well I see how far I get'. Put the cruise control on set at 60mph and went the rest of the 180 miles. On the way back set it at 60 again and made it to the SAAB convention in Danvers another 180 miles. HA HA. On the way home from a quick stop at my uncles house it stutters and dies again.

Read here that letting it rest often helps so I left it there and came back in the morning. After about 30 second of cranking and white smoke pouring out the back it starts to be happy. I gently get it home with rmp below 2000 the whole way. (It bucks and such when taxing engine).

Made it back to the garage where the tools and manual are and started to diagnose the problem. I checked the fuel rate first (totally normal 900+ml in 30sec). Then I read all about the ignition module here. The manual says that in my 87 900T there should be an ~3v AC pulse between pins 1 and 25 on the LH connector when cranking the engine. Tested it and found it was not there at all. From what I understood that would prevent the fuel relay from running but the car starts and runs in this condition?! Hall effect sensor is getting its supply, 12v. Then I started to check the other connector points. Man it was all messed up! The supposedly switched supply voltage on pin 18, was permanently on and not affected by fuse 22 and one of the grounds was not connected. This seems like a rather big wiring nightmare now...tracking down ground faults etc. I don't undertand how it is running at all.

will start again tomorrow. Maybe I figure it out.
