The usual suspects for your '89 NA are the crank position sensor and -- my first choice -- a bad ignition control module. The latter get hot, then fail. When they cool, the car runs again. Since you've got a new crank sensor, I'm betting on the ignition control module.

For non-turbo '89 only (maybe some '88, too??), the ignition control module is part of the coil, so finding a used replacement may be difficult. Brand new are still available, apparently, but they are discontinued by Saab. For used, try http://www.car-part.com; for new, try thesaabsite.com and search 7538796, which is the part number.

If the control module/coil is not the culprit, then, yes, the ECU might be wonky -- another one-year-only thing. However, my recollection is that the failure mode is not temporary?? Might be worth searching a bit more...

Last, IF you are comfortable with working on electronics and IF you have a Bentley manual, which has wiring diagrams, you might be able to retrofit an earlier or later coil + separate ignition control module set-up, which, depending on parts availability, may be a cheaper and easier solution.

This is conjecture, though -- I don't know for sure that this can be done, but it seems plausible enough because the '90 NA cars have a standard coil and ign. control module, and the same EZK ignition system and, in fact, the same EZK part number. If you do go this route, be sure to get the control module from a non-turbo car.
