The switch is pretty easy to test, and you can use the connector at the bottom of the door. You can also check at the control unit - Bentley shows the pinout of the 8-pin connector. Two pins are continuous in one position, and two pins are continuous in another. I'd be shocked if that switch is failing - I've never had one fail.
I don't remember the wiring off the top of my head, but I don't think it can be a ground. The switch is "home run" all the way back to the control unit IIRC. It's most likely the control unit, or the control unit's ground (usually by the handbrake, though I think it moved once or twice).
