I really can't see what little bit of vibration that rubber band stops, if any, hurts. And by the way, the rubber is 20 years old so I am thinking that there is not much buffering left in it anyway. It is kind of like the over design of the alternator w/ the rubber bushing, I have replaced that w/ a solid brass bushing and see no difference what so ever (and by the way is the rubber bushing stopping the alternator from vibrating the engine or vise versa). So there may be a real reason for the rubber band, I just don't know what it is.
