First, you have to really love your car. Since you're posting here, I'll assume that is the case.
The biggest issue with the Saab transmissions is that you have to pull the whole engine in order to repair or replace them. You can certainly get a rebuilt auto trans (Eriksson Industries in Old Saybrook, Connecticut), but this is a very expensive proposition. Most everyone on this board will tell you that the car is worth fixing. As I said earlier, you've really gotta love the car. A 5-speed conversion is definitely doable but obviously involves more than just the transmission swap. You'll need to get a shifter and clutch pedal, etc., etc. A 5-speed will give you better gas milage though, so if you have to repair, you might as well replace.
Myself, I'd do a COMPLETE fluid change, filter change, band and kick-down adjustment before I'd give up on your current transmission. All this can be done while the trans is in the car. Replace the trans fluid with Amsoil Supershift and add a bottle of Lucas. I did this on my auto trans and have no issues now. 198k miles and still going strong.
Follow the link below for complete fluid change instructions.
