If the fluid, band and filter adjustments and changes make little or no difference I'd say "implosion" is imminent. You can test this by putting car in each gear with foot fully on brake - car should stall - if not slippage continues (see Bentley for tests). You may also find it takes longer for car to engage 2nd and 3rd gear or that car accelerates slowly in 2nd and 3rd. If you smell the clutches burning then it really is toast.
Having replaced two ATs at approx 150000 that would seem to be about their lifespan on average. I now drive a 5 speed and there is a world of difference between the two in terms of engine wear and gas consumption.
There is nothing wrong in getting a used AT from a wrecker - just know a bit about its history.
If money is of secondary importance and you or your husband are handy consider the conversion - since you will get much better MPG and there will be less wear on the engine.
