What condiion are the rotors in? Are they unevenly worn - ridges and furrows along their width? This could be a sign of a sticking caliper.

Under bad sticky conditions one of the pads would be really worn down where another would appear normal. I've had sticking pistons for both the indirect and direct side but I think its the indirect that sticks more often. In other words a sticking piston in combination with uneven rotor wear is a sign that the caliper needs an overhaul.

What happened in my case is that the rust/corrosion formed just at the part of the piston just where it is exposed to the elements preventing normal piston movement as the pad became more worn - some say if the pistons are badly pitted the whole caliper is junk.Putting in new pads might help because the corroded part of the piston would be well below the seal area.

I am inclined to agree that the pistons can be polished up but bad corrosion is a problem. After doing a rebuild on both sides they leaked badly at the pitted piston area no matter how polished they looked. Replacements with proper handbrake adjustment will do the trick.

The PB blaster solution was more effective in unsticking a rear brake piston - but there I had the luxury of working the piston back and forth many times to remove the corrosion buildup.
