Thank you, Ray and No Snaab, for your responses. We have looked everywhere on the radio, the case, the face, etc. for any sign of a code. No luck.
Three years ago, we began having problem with elec system and took to only certified Saab diagnostic place nearby. Even though they had the equipment to hook up the car, all they could tell us was there was a problem somewhere in the stereo system. Since we had other transportation, Saab was pretty much left alone until this year. Took to a more highly recommended place farther away, but didn't tell them about other diagnosis. They, too, said that stereo system was problem, specifically the equalizer, but that the radio didn't work either. It wasn't a code problem (no beeping, etc.); it just didn't work.
So, we've bought the replacement for amp, equalizer, and radio (which they will install for us) but have no radio code.
Meanwhile, when they put back the old equalizer and turned the system on, it started "blowing fuses all over the place". Hmmmm......could have messed up the contacts on wiring when removed from dash -- I don't know.
Anyway, I don't care if the radio works or not. Prefer to hear the classic Saab engine sound and wind rather than country music (which seems to be only genre played in these mountains). But I DO want the car to start when I turn the key.
I have checked for stray lights that might be staying on. Nada, zilch. No, the brake lights don't stick. The signals all work. Interior lights work well (replaced relay for those a few services ago). Altenator is doing its job nicely, but we did have the voltage regulator replaced and new belts put on.
The battery is a "better" one, but not the best. We were contemplating selling the beast and didn't want to sink tons of money into it that we wouldn't recover. We put a cutoff switch on one battery post so we could disconnect when not driving, but it was hard to remember to pop the hood and turn the knob.
I will let you all know what the final outcome is. If you have other suggestions, please let me in on your hunch 'cause it is getting close to topless season on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the only car to drive is the Saab! Nothing compares.
