I am sure they are only sold together, but you could probably have each part serviced separately by a auto-electric specialist.(why bother)
my auto sedan does similar to what you say, has been for over a year. when it does not turn the starter I have checked the solenoid lead and have battery voltage, so the solenoid and/or starter have a "bad spot". To prove that I replaced with the starter from my '89T for bout a month and it was trouble free. (so what do I do next? put the OG starter back in the sedan!) It mainly gives me a "no start" after the motor is quite hot (summer in FL = 15min drive). If I wait it out it will start, no fuss, if I bang on the starter and wiggle the cables to the solenoid/starter I can usually get going on my way. But this by no means happens all the time, it is random and not very often!
