Something I posted back in '07. I also had a hard time getting the rack to rotate.


"16mm and 18mm crows foot wrenches came in handy for removing and tightening the two hydraulic lines.

I loosened the sway bar mounts, but did not have to remove the bar to get the rack in or out.

The pinch bolt for the steering column was easier accessed from the inside of the car by removing the rubber boot in the floorboard.

I fought with the rack for a few hours and couldn't get the greasy thing to rotate the required amount to get it to come out. The hard lines on the rack were hitting the pinch clamp on the shifter linkage. I had to remove the pinch bolt, then move that clamp back towards the firewall. I talked with a Saab Master Tech after I did the job, and he said he had never heard of that issue before, so it might not be an issue for you.

We also removed the return line from the reservoir, and capped the opening off. The line was placed in a coffee can and we filled the reservoir up with fluid. We started the car for a split second and ran the fluid thru the sytsem to flush it. We did this three times with fresh power steering fluid each time, then reattached the hose to the reservoir(not much room to work, so it took awhile). We did a final fill of the system and worked the wheel lock to lock(but not going full lock to aerate the fluid)...worked like a charm.

Going to a car wash and degreasing would be a wise thing to do, unless you like grease up to your elbows....but getting greasy is really unavoidable, so be sure to wear latex gloves.
