Thanks all for your thoughts. Saab86 wins the gold star for being closest to the mark.

Turns out the linkage off the handle to the releases is pretty darn stiff. Hadn't moved in a long time and whatever lube it had is 20 years old.

I'll live with it for now, some sunny spring day I will take the top off things and investigate, or drop the cloth liner and ditto.

The car has relatively lo miles, and was babied and stored in a garage lots of its life. A few willow leaves and pine needles around track area but no real crud, slide area looks really clean.

I got the Armstrong model sunroof, no motor and no crank either. There's a little recessed hand area, with a centered bar that you tug forward on to close it and tug backwards on to open it. (Locks again wherever you stop it.)

It is somehow linked to little catches out at the sides, that bite into a toothed track along each side.

The catches weren't released but much wiggling got that center bar to slide some towards the rear and they moved.

Now with confidence that it must work, I seem pretty able to make the thing obey. Definitely needs some lubing or tightening up somewhere tho.

Much bigger fish to fry (upper A-arms, crank seal) but at least I know I can take it outdoors.
