Manual sunroof jammed part open.

My newest acquisition:
An '89 900S hatch with relatively low (130,000) miles, no rust above, very pretty paint, no dash cracks (garaged). Will need A-frame support repair some time, but still fairly sound there.
A couple of immediate issues, but before I put it on road, I need to get the sunroof to close all the way.
It's a manual sunroof, open about 2" still.
Never used one of these. The little latch handle wiggles back and forth a bit, but when you push to rear, no motion, just a kind of dull clunk. Push forward, no motion, no noise.
I guess I'll pull the wind deflector and reach the front edge of the sunroof, then remove screws and take top off. Unless someone knows what's probably wrong, I'll have to be all eyes as I do that and try to figure it out.
Will report back here what I find.
It's been pretty fierce cold here, off and on. Was 4 degrees F night before last.
