I feel your pain. The first time I replaced one, in my '85 900S nearly 7 years ago, I decided to go the less expensive route with the Scantech one and then just had to turn around and spent the $100+ for a Saab one a few months later, it's still good to this day.
In addition to being leak prone, the Scantech ones don't operate that smoothly. But I guess now we don't have much of a choice now with the real ones being NLA. I do wish someone would come out with a rebuild kit for them, I disassembled that one that came out of my '87 and it would be easy to replace the seals, the problem is some of them have odd shapes.
If you do pull one from a junkyard my advice is to get both the valve and the core (if it appears to be in good shape) as one unit and install it like that. I've done this twice with good results.
