If you mileage is a bit high, I have found that the ignition switch tends to malfunction doing weird stuff like you have mentioned. This happened to me more than once. A by pass that got me home more than once was to:
* connect the pos (+) side of the coil to the pos(+) battery terminal
* making sure that the car is in neutral
* an old Saab trick is to by pass the starter circuit
* by getting a solid piece of wire,(A paper clip would due, but insulate it as it will get hot)
* go to the fuse panel, look to the left and observe what looks like a small clock/plug
* When you connect the 2 o'clock connector with the 6 o'clock connector, the car should crank and start
This would indicate that your ignition switch is pretty much worn out/fried and in need of replacement
