apologizes in advance in case I get this wrong...
the old belt drive fans were, originally, constant drive and actually hindered the cooling that was available at speed. That was the reason fan clutches came into being, a kluge to get around that issue, trying to get the fan out of the way and let the airflow do a better job.
Somewhere along the way electric motors got much more reliable, less expensive, smaller, and all that... and electric fans were introduced. They had the immediate advantage of only running when necessary.
And, in fact, if a car with electrin fans, say a Dodge Neon, has a properly working radiator and otherwise cooling system the fans should not be needed at near highway speed, as the volume of the air from the moving car thru the radiator will equal or exceed the fan volume.
Advantage to avoiding generating waste heat? It would seem so but where is it coming from and how else could it be used?
