I have a C1994TC with about 122,00 miles.
I recently returned from a short drive in the rain. When I parked the car I was unable to turn off the engine. When I turn the key to the off position the radio turns off but the headlights and engine stayed on. The key seemed to have the normal resistance when turning it. I turned the key back to the middle position and the radio came back on and the abs pump started up. I can turn the key all the way to where the starter engages and the starter will engage. ( I did this once accidentally while trying to push down on the key while moving it thru its normal range) The lock out seems to work, in keeping the car locked in reverse, but I was able to remove the key when it was not in reverse.
I was driving the car earlier today and I noticed that the coolant was very low, almost a gallon. I refilled with distilled water. I was not too careful in filling it and some water may have splashed around. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem I just mentioned it as it could be a source of water getting to where it shouldn't be.
Another probably unrelated issue, I just noticed during the same drive that the light for the dash cluster is out. Again I don't know if it has anything to do with the ignition issue, I just thought it might point to some related electrical issue.
I tried killing the engine by pulling the battery cable, but the engine kept running. I reattached the battery cable and stalled the car as gently as I could in reverse.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me regarding the ignition issue. I searched the board and I could not find anything sounded like my problem. Some people were having a problem with the ignition free turning, which I don't think is my issue as I have resistance and it seems to operate some systems normally.
Also if I were to encounter this problem again is there a better way to kill the engine? Should I have pulled some ignition wires? I would hate to have to resort to stalling the car again. I did pull the battery after staling the car to keep the battery from dying.
