The C 900 is a "true blue Swede" whereas the 9000 has its roots in a joint effort to by Saab with Lancia and Fiat to design and build a vehicle around a single platform.

In that sense you could say the 9000 was a cross platform vehicle and not uniquely a SAAB.

They may have even used Renault or Peugeot engines in some of the models.

I remember reading reviews of the Lancia Thema and 9000 when they first came out and they were hailed as the next big thing because of their design and assembly approach which was said to be extremely cost efficient.

It may be apocryphal but the story went like this:

The time it took to assemble the cantilevered hood on the 900 was roughly equivalent to what it took to put together the entire 9000 subframe.

That speaks to fact that the 900 was designed by aircraft engineers and the 9000 by bean counters.
