Sounds like a classic case of inner driver degradation, which almost universally comes down to the passenger side inner driver, whose lubrication takes a beating due to the high temp environment provided by the exhaust manifold.
As suggested, you CAN swap inner drivers, but I've never been convinced that it's a good idea. You'd have to pull the axles on both sides, and that's not a trivial operation. I also recollect that you need some way of supporting the differential during the time that both drivers are out and the prospect of mucking-up the internal gearing was too daunting for my appetite.
I did the PS driver on a '93 a few years back using the Townsend guide (I think) and it went pretty well-- you'll need a big socket to remove the wheel bearing nut (25 mm?) and I needed to have a CV shop press in the seal on the new driver (which they did gratis in exchange for the old driver core value). I also took the opportunity to replace ball joints and tie rod ends.
It's just too damned bad that the auto tranny failed about 2000 miles later, I really liked the feeling of having fixed it. Your results may vary.
