I would like to start this post with a thank you to all the people who responded to my earlier posts, as shown below, which relate to my current issue.
Well CMyles was correct, no surprise to the regulars on this board.
I had a leaking clutch slave, which I rebuilt. While I had the clutch disassembled I thought I should do the seals and the bearings. I tried using the shower drain method for installing a new rear main seal. I ended up bottoming out one of the bolts in the crankshaft and it sheared flush with the face of the crankshaft, and is was making contact with something which caused the engine not to turn freely. I tried to get the broken bolt out using a few various less destructive methods but I ended up using a carbide burr to grind out the broken bolt. In grinding out the broken bolt I destroyed the threads on the crankshaft for that bolt hole.
I was trying to get the car ready for a out of town trip and I guess I was a little hasty in finding a way to seal the damaged hole. I plugged the hole using a bit of silicone hose crammed tightly into the hole, and sealed with a liberal amount of 518 covering it.
As there was a missing bolt and reading a post that someone had felt a vibration from leaving a bolt off I decided to shorten the unused flywheel bolt and jb-weld it in place.
I put everything back together and things were fine for about a month. But recently I had issues. It turns out the shortened bolt came loose and was hitting the middle area of the pressure plate, this caused some weird clutch vibrations when going into first and reverse. (for some reason all other gears seemed normal.
On top of the loose bolt part, I also have some kind of leak which has coated the flywheel, causing the pressure plate to slip.
My question is what is the most likely source of the leak. Even though I sheared the bolt installing the rear main seal, it did seem to go in correctly. One possibility is that I did not seat deeply enough. I understand that the seal should be seated further back that the prior seal. I think I did this, the seal I removed was flush, the replacement seal was about a sixteenth of an inch past flush.
I realize the leak could also be coming from the hasty plug I put in the damaged bolt hole. Just kind of difficult to tell which is leaking.
When I did the clutch I also did the clutch shaft seal. When I removed the clutch shaft cover I noticed a bit of trans fluid inside, don't know if this is normal. When I did the clutch job I didn't notice any trans fluid but the car had sat for a while prior to removing the cover. I didn't notice any fluids on the exterior of the clutch shaft cover.
One last thing. Is the pressure plate toast. It looks clean I can't see any signs of oil on it or any burn marks.
Sorry for the really long post, if you reached this point thank you for your patients.
Any input is welcome.
