That is a good idea but I took too much of the material away when grinding. I ground past the original threads. I would have to add material if I want to tap to the original thread size. I could weld some filler and then tap it, but I don't have a portable welder and I don't think I have enough room or skills to make a perfectly straight tap.

I am thinking of plugging the hole with a better plug. Maybe a tapered plug made of lead or some other soft metal. I could pound it in and then add some sealer to the exposed end. I was even thinking that I should add some foil muffler tape over that to ensure a leak proof seal.

I am still unsure where the fluid is coming from. I don't know if it is possible to put extra sealant around the lip of the rear main seal. Am I assuming correctly that the rear main seal stays stationary relative to the housing and the crank shaft spins inside of it.

If that is the case would it help at all to put some sealant around the outer lip of the rear main seal?

I really don't mind experimenting and pulling the clutch again. But it is getting kind of cold and it does kind of make it a little less enjoyable.
