Using the handle from a 5 gallon bucket is a good idea, it's actually a few thousandths smaller than #6 Cu wire and may work a little better. I never tried warming up the shroud to remove or replace it but that is also a good idea. I'd put it in a tub or sink of hot water for a while and then race to install it (but you've got other stuff to do first).
