If my assessment is correct there is probably no damage other than maybe to the torque convertor seal. I think it would be helpful to know whether the engine and transmission are mated such that you could easily re-install all of the flange bolts. Are the engine and transmission flanges in tight contact and all of the holes aligned or have the two been shifted? That would tell me some important things. Don't re-install the torque convertor to flex plate bolts and there should be no need to turn the engine at all. It sounds like maybe you have some slipping clutches but a good flush and re-fill would be the first thing to do. Really slimy, old ATF can make the unit slip when it's cold.
