You said there was no cassette mechanism in your radio when you opened it. It may have been wired by someone for an ipod. Generally if someone is adding an ipod jack, they just override the cassette and wire the jack in place of it. Is there a 1/8" jack on the face of your radio?
The radio cage is simple to remove. pull the top lip downward and the bottom lip upward (actually bend the cage) so that the opening is now bow tie shaped. That will release the tabs that hold it in.
Be careful pulling things out. It is possible to disconnect the heater control rod when your messing around in there.
When you're putting things back in, it's best to remove the driver's side speaker and reach through to pull the wires back in, rather than force everything in place from the dash opening in front.
