That's one of the many words in the dictionary that should have my picture next to it....followed closely by "confusing" :)
The goal here is to have a distributor that's ready to bolt on w/o having to adjust the timing.
There's a notch in the distributor body that corresponds to a matching protrusion at the base of the cap. This positions the cap so the you can remove/replace it w/o affecting the timing.
Now that I think of it, if I "move" the notch, I guess I'll have to move the cap retaining clips too.
Ok - I just spent a few more minutes studying the two distributors in question (87' 900t & 88' 9000t). Moving the notch is easy enough, but since it'd have to be 3/4" (just take my word for this) to the left (clockwise) from the original position on the 87' unit...so would the clips. That's a problem. While there's room for the notch, there isn't room for the right side clip...the screw for which would have to reside under the vac canister.
I could get around that by fabricating a custom clip mount/retainer in such a way as to permit screwing it into the dist body, NEXT to the clip (as compared to on top of it). Not horrible.
There's no easy way to describe this to those of you who don't have both types of distributors in their lap as I do. Also, I think only a small minority of those reading this own a pre 88' 900. Hence, some of the nuisances specific to earlier models tend to complicate comparative discussions such as this one. One example is the orientation of the distributor cap & drive dog...another is one cap retaining clip being longer than the other. The subtle changes over a decade+ of production are many. Could be fun to start listing them!
Anyway.......if the objective were to just to install the distributor ONCE & forget about it, one could probably get by just orienting the distributor as necessary to get the plug wires about where they should be & re-adjust the timing. However, I want something that can be installed on the side of the road w/minimal fuss.
So to achieve this, I'd have to move the cap notch AND fab up a custom clip retainer. Hmm.....it might be easier to drill a new hole for the drive dog pin. Upon further thought, that might just be essential - I'll have to think about this.
What I'm mostly concerned with is what triggers the firing of the injectors. If the Hall shutter wheel does this, things become more complicated as the position of the shutter wheel will have to be altered as well.
NOW I'm confused.
