Patton,
I'd say that you have the right idea. I like the T37, I rebuilt and drove a lot of them back when they were pretty much still all virgin units and anyway, with the right co-pilot, it's better to have a hand free, right? If the car you're looking at has been babied then that T37 should go about another 42,000 miles before it wants to come out. Both the T37 and the 5 speed generally (a generalization based only on my experience mind you) need to come out at about 150,000 miles. The 5 speeds will need pinion bearings (at least) and the T37s need full rebuilding, you'll find all kinds of damaged hard parts as well as spent friction elements in them. Just keep in mind that the easiest way to do the 5 speed swap is to have a donor car parked right next to the keeper because it's scrounging the little bits and pieces that makes the job frustrating. Try to have both the donor and the keeper be about the same model year or you can have small hurdles to jump, e.g. internal versus external shift centering. Good luck
