If both cars are running fine, then what's the problem? They are different motors, assembled in different ways, with different components. Where any given lead ends up on the distributor is pretty much irrelevant, so long as the firing order remains 1-3-4-2...
And the best that could be achieved if one put the spark leads on the distributor 90 degrees out of position would be a VERY rough running engine, if it ran at all...
If one motor is not running, and the distributor is thought to be not in the right position, then the solution is to remove the valve cover, turn the engine until the #1 cylinder is at top dead center with both valves closed, and align the distributor so that the rotor points to where the #1 lead should go, and install the rest of the leads.
ON a 4 cylinder, in theory, the distributor should work perfectly fine in any of the 4 possible positions. What you run out of eventually, though, is lengths of the wires that connect to the distributor, whether they be spark leads, or the hall pickup wire.
