The orientation of the distributor is actually fixed to just two possibilities by the clips. The vacuum advance hose connection reduces the two possibilities down to just one. The rotor has only one orientation, by virtue of the offset. So, the only variable is the way the spark plug wires are connected.
Even though 16V and 8V are different engines, the difference is in the cylinder head only, the cylinder actions are identical for the 16V and the 8V. So, the TDC of the 1st cylinder happens at the same time for these two engines. Unless there is a 90 degree offset in the distributor drive, the 1st cylinder connector should have the same position in the distributor body.
I am back to square one.
