Again, just a follow up for any sad follower who ends up searching for the same problem.
I had the dash/control lights coming on after shutting off the car and removing the key. I ended up finding that it was Fuse 23 drawing .89 amp for no reason. I replaced the ignition switch, but had the same behavior. Wiggling the wires in the ignition switch ended up with the lights blinking on off on, etc, showing that the ignition switch was the problem.
Fuse 23 is fed off of the "X" terminal, which should be hot under all conditions EXCEPT "Lock" when the key is removed according to the Bentley manual. I found a SMALL amount of play in the switch mounting, and thought that was the problem when the lights went out as I rotated the switch that little bit. However, as I was finishing up, congratulating myself, the lights came back on. ARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!
I ended up simply putting in a switch on the X terminal with some new wire, and plugging it into the existing wire so nothing was cut. Truthfully, if I had to do it over again I wouldn't spend the $45 for another worthless ignition switch and end up having to modify things anyway, I would buy the $9 auto parts store ignition switch and rewire it to begin with.
