I have a 1984 900 Turbo (8 valve engine) which I love very much but something really weird happened today.
The car has been running really welll lately after I just replaced the alternator and has been fun to drive.
This morning I drove to the tip and offloaded some rubbish and on the way out there was a funny rattling and tinkling noise going up a slight hill (at first I thought it was the speedo cable), then when the noise stopped, the rev counter just dropped to zero and the engine stalled.
The engine turns over OK but has no compression.
Interesting enough, when you take the cap off the coolant expansion tank the engine turning over sounds a bit better.
I have had no past symptoms of a loose timing chain ( I am really familiar with the noise as I've heard it on my 1981 900 Turbo). I must admit I think I did hear a slight rattle sound on idle a few days ago but only the once and very insignificant There have been no past symptoms of low compression as the engine has had full power lately and has been great to drive.
What I am wondering is that can the timing chains in the early 8 valve C900's break without any warning at all? All the early C900's I've had with timing chain problems have rattled and I have fixed it BEFORE they break.
It is true that the early 8 valve C900 engines may have clearance between the valves & pistons when the timing chain breaks?
If it is a broken compression ring, wouldn't the engine start & run on three cylinders?
It would be great if someone could put some light on what the cause of the low compression could be?
Thanking you all in anticipation
