If you are going to take the hoses off the valve, you might take a length of hose and try to blow into the inlet of the valve when the valve is in the closed position.
See if it is hard to blow on the hose ( which it should ) and then have the valve opened up while blowing on the hose. It should then flow out what is in the heater core freely, so another hose connected to the valve dumping into the coolant reservoir ( if it is low use a container to catch the coolant ) would prevent too big a mess. You can operate the valve on and off and see if the air pressure you are putting on the inlet is closing and opening...
When you go back together with the system, make sure the heater valve is fully on, and bleed the system. On our Sooboo Legacy, they have to elevate the front of the car to get the heater core to bleed out properly, so it is important to make sure you don't have an air bubble in it.
Sorry for the long explanation -- it might not even be related to your problem, but we would sure like to know how it turns out.
