Jeff,
It's current coin that no car audio system can any close match home stereo quality. Until one tries SQ (sound quality) champ car. Yes, there're some challenges (mostly reflections and asymmetrical listener position) that have to be overcome, but there're some bonuses which can hardly (or quite expensive) be achieved at home (the low frequency gain; widely used active filtering, lot's user-friendly ways to adjust frequency response - I'd like to see a geek modding his $20K+ home stereo speakers or tweaking $30K+ amp).

I'm not trying to push anyone here into serious car audio, but - nothing personal, I'd like not to offend anybody here - reading that serious music listening in car is impossible is just like being deep in mid-frame photography and listen to common talks about sharpness, clarity and dynamic range from point-and-shoot photo geeks. I've been there, I've done that and I know for sure that - although that's not that easy - excellent car stereo that is on a par with the best of home systems is definitely possible.

James,
I did said in that post that I mostly listen to my stereo when in the trees and such. While driving my stereo is either turned off or giving me some background (like listening to the news in a traffic jam) or the basic rhythm when the pedal goes to the metal.

Zig

P.S.
Headphones are the best and easiest way to get very good to perfect acoustic response (and also - the impulse response that gives you that real pleasure when you feel that immersion). But there're no headphones that will give you at least acceptable sound stage WITH THE CURRENT RECORDING METHODS USED FOR MOST AUDIO PUBLISHING OF NOWADAYS (X/Y, M/S and so forth). And please no links to holophonics and such.
