Gents,
unfortunately none of car makers employ real audio engineers in the staff - that's the main reason for the text in the subject field. The 2nd reason goes for money: there's no need to design hi-fi stereo (n.b.: hi-fi stands for high fidelity and is a technical term; hi-end stand for high end and has nothing in common with quality, it's pure 100% commercial term) and install it onto every car (ok, even to offer it as an option) since 99.9% clients can not hear the difference between 256kbps MP3 and original CD-DA source. 95% can't hear the difference between 192Kbps and original - and moreover, they don't care. The rest 0.01% goes for the clients of aftermarket audio and car-audio studios.
Btw, it's been tested and proved that Mark Levinson that can be found as a hi-fi offer for some luxury cars - sucks. I'm not talking about the brand itself but about their products and designs put into volvo's, caddies, lincolns and so forth. Even B&O - with their really inventive high-dispersion speakers in hi-end audi's - sucks. Not that much as M/L do (and much much less then other stock stereo's) - but it really does.
Some stock headunits are not that bad. Some (but much much more rare) stock speakers aren't that bad either. But every stock system sucks: if they've got a good head-unit then they put low-quality speakers; if they've got good head-unit and speakers then they've got bad amps; if they've got even good head-unit and speakers and amplifiers then they saved on acoustic enclosure (e.g. I've not aware of any stock system that utilize either closed box or vented box for mid-bass or midrange). I bet all my funds that when they learn to go with good head-unit and speakers and amps and (what a surprise!) hire a good acoustic engineer and put each driver into an appropriate acoustic enclosure - they'll save on wires.
James,
Yep, I go deep in the woods for that :)
If I've got no time for woods, I just go to a parking lot at 1-2AM - it's not quite the same as the woods, but works.
Zig
P.S.
If you've got a good enough system - and moreover, you've trained your ears - you'll be astonishly depressed to find out that YOU CAN'T FIND A GOOD RECORDING NOWADAYS! That's sucks the most... :(
