I just did this procedure on my 87 SPG.
I had three leaks, all up front. One was a hole (factory drilled, but plug must have been lost) where the cruise control hose exited the firewall near the fusebox. The second was a torn shifter linkage boot at the center of firewall (is yours a 5spd?). Third was at this rubber/foam plug type thing (about 2 inches in diameter) at the firewall on the passenger side, near the back of the engine bay. A bunch of wires run through this plug, but one (aftermarket) wasn't fed through it properly and it created a gap where water got in. Much of this water drained to the rear.
You gotta pull the center console and carpets (at least the front) and test with a garden hose (a partner helps). Find those three areas I mentioned and spray them (as well as other places others have mentioned) directly with water and look for leaks on the inside!
I used eDead sound deadener to help with sound proofing. Get the liquid stuff (it's really cheap and worked perfectly). It will replace that 'tar-paper' stuff that you scrape off the floorplan on the inside. Then replace the foam mats if you have to. I just dried them out and put them back, but if you want to just use dynamat or something similar instead.
Feel free to email me: mikey411vm at gmail. I have pictures and can answer questions if you'd like
