If you time the engine by ear, you will likely not end up with enough retard under boost, causing detonation. If you time the engine by ear with the vacuum hose attached, you could easily end up with over 20* timing at idle, which would leave you at about 16* BTDC at any boost about ~4-5 psi. (If you time the engine at idle without the vacuum hose attached, you could then end up with 4-5* more advance than you wanted during high-vacuum conditions.)
Time the engine to 16* BTDC, with the vac hose removed, and you will be good to go.
(Incidentally, the EZK system on NON-TURBOS does basically time by ear: it advances until it detects spark knock, then retards a bit and sets the timing there.)
