As stated, if it's bad you'll get crankcase pressure OR if it's reversed. Here's a picture of a dirty old one (that works just fine). This one is close to the valve cover but it can interrupt the hose between the valve cover and the intake manifold anywhere along it's length. You should be able to suck air through it but not blow air into it when it's attached to the valve cover. The valve cover is contiguous with the crankcase so if the turbo can push pressure past that valve into the valve cover then it can pressurize the crankcase.
