Typical failure sound for a CV joint is a lot of clicking on turns instead of a large clunk.
Check is the condition of the lower A-arms, especially the one on that side. What you're describing is a lot like what I heard before the rear leg of the arm (as it were) parted company with the rest of the unit.
Bad control arm bushings (where the rubber has turned to mush) will cause some sounds like that, too.
Then check the tightness of the wheel bolts and the axle nuts.
Is this an auto or 5-speed?
