As others indicated above, because the fingers on the distributor shaft are offset slightly from the center-line, there's only one way that the distributor shaft can be oriented with the camshaft and be pushed in all the way. So, it doesn't matter what the positions of the crank or camshafts are; you eyeball the slot in the camshaft, orient the fingers of the distributor in roughly the same orientation and try to push it in. If it doesn't, keep turning the rotor incrementally until it does.
I can attest to this, having R&R'd the distributor to replace the O-ring this morning.
One suggestion: Replace the O ring while you have the distributor out. The one that was removed on my car was hard and brittle from heat, age, and oil exposure. And was probably the cause of not only an oil leak onto the exhaust manifold, but also a hard-to-track-down vacuum leak.
