Ray,
the ECU is protected as much as that very wire and I don't see any reason for it to fail. As for the tracing the wiring loom - unless ECM/ECU triggers its outputs into the high-Z (high impedance) state, it does no good when some potential (voltage) is applied onto the ECM/ECU output. So if that wire is damaged and goes shortened with some other wire or body panel, then the replacement ECU will fail just like the old one. Or, better say, it may fail in another way, but it will.
Maybe it is the PO who went there when installing some alarm system. Or when trying to fix the central locking. Or just out of curiosity.
Or maybe it's just me who can't do anything until I do understand what I'm doing, why I'm doing this and what happens if I don't do this or do it in a different way. But I can't imagine how things can differ from this approach: it's a human's nature to think and understand. Because otherwise we don't differ from bio-robots or monkeys.
